the girl with all the gifts (2016)

Description:

The Girl With All The Gifts is a 2016 post-apocalyptic zombie movie that stars Sennia Nanua and Gemma Arterton. It's based on the book of the same name by M.R. Carey.

In a dystopian future where zombies outnumber people, children kept by the military are not what they appear to be.

Review:

This is one of those movies that were a bit slow for me at first. Fortunately, after the twenty-minute mark, it becomes intense and clever.

Right away we are thrown into a different type of world. Kids seem like prisoners and the information isn't spoon fed to us. We start to put the pieces together, which I enjoyed guessing what was going on. It puts the audience in the main character, Melanie's, perspective, who is left in the dark as well.

What I really liked about this film was the feeling of isolation. It truly felt like they were the only ones left on Earth, which is sometimes lost in zombie movies.

The virus is explained as being a fungal infection, which is why zombie movies scare me the most. I could see this actually happening in real life. I also liked that they created their own term, "hungries."

In short, this film was well shot and had some great characters. I didn't like the way some animals were shown being eaten, but it is a zombie movie after all.

It makes you think about our place on Earth and how easily we could be replaced. I enjoyed this one and would recommend seeing it at least once. I wouldn't watch it again, but I'm glad I saw it.
