Affliction (1997)

Description:

Affliction is a 1997 thriller movie directed by Paul Schrader (who was a writer for "Taxi Driver" 1976). Wade (played by Nick Nolte) is an unstable cop who becomes suspicious when there is a hunting accident in town. Was it really an accident? Or a murder?

Review:

I like stories where I'm wondering if the main character is insane or not, like other movies such as "10 Cloverfield Lane" and "Creep".

Wade is definitely a volatile person. We learn that his dad is an abusive drunk and he can't keep a steady relationship. He tries to care for his daughter, but his new obsession with this hunting case is driving him off the deep end.

This is another movie that is technically not a horror movie, but it is a thriller and it is set on Halloween night during the first scene. Plus Willem Dafoe plays Wade's younger brother, and he's scary in any performance he plays. Even when he's just a normal guy!

I enjoyed the snowy setting, it reminded me of Fargo (1996), but I liked Fargo better. Overall, I liked the mystery of the plot, but the ending didn't do much for me. It was sad watching Wade's character fall apart.
