The Cremator (1969)

Description:

The Cremator is a 1969 Czechoslocvak black comedy/horror movie directed by Juraj Herz. The movie is set during WWII, in the 1930's. Kopfrkingl (played by Rudolf Hrusínský) is a controlling, death obsessed cremator. He takes his work seriously and on the surface he is a family man and a humanitarian. After joining the Nazi party, he becomes consumed to the idea of setting souls free by cremating bodies. Dead -- or alive.

Review:

This movie is very disturbing and unsettling right from the beginning. There are many unique camera angles and quick cuts that I rarely see in movies.

Kopfrkingl is creepy right away. He doesn't let anyone drink or smoke, even though we learn that he goes to brothels and soon becomes a killer. After reading a Tibetan book about reincarnation, he believes he is freeing the suffering souls of the dead through his work as a cremator. This reminded me of the movie Enter the Void (2009), which is also a disturbing movie but shot in an extraordinary way.

There is a scary comparison I see in his character to Hitler, who is gaining power at this point in the story. After he joins the Nazi's he believes he is killing people in order to help the world be a "better place". His overpowering character is scary to watch, I wasn't sure where the story was going next.

Overall, I can't say I've seen a lot of movies like this one. It's considered one of the best Czech movies and I can see why. I like this movie for it's camera work, but I didn't enjoy how sadistic and evil the main character was.
