Housebound (2014)

Description:

Housebound is a 2014 New Zealand horror comedy directed by Gerard Johnstone. Morgana O'Reilly plays Kylie Bucknell, a woman who is caught by the police after trying to steal money from an ATM. She must stay at her old childhood house with her mother, who she doesn't get along with, under house arrest. What makes matters worse is that the house might be haunted.

Review:

This is a horror comedy that is well done. I've watched two other horror comedies this month, "Dead Snow 2" and "Excision". Both used over the top violence and gore for shock and comedy, but Housebound had witty dialogue, great characters, and an interesting plot.

Kylie is one of those characters who gives no cares and it works for the plot. I kept hoping her relationship with her parents would get better as crazy, spooky things happened in the house.

There were a few good jump scares and some obvious story plots, but I can't say I've seen a funny horror movie like this one. It was scary when it needed to be and sarcastically funny without having to go over the top.

There were a few scenes that I felt were left out, such as when Amos (played by Glen-Paul Waru) is caught in the strange neighbor's bear trap. They never show him getting out or having an injured leg, he just randomly comes back without much explanation.

Overall, I would recommend this movie. It's a good movie to watch with a group of friends or family since there isn't any annoying sex scenes or weird sexual characters (that really annoys me about some horror movies). It has a good horror/comedy balance with an exciting ending.
