The Witch Part 1: The Subversion

The Witch Part 1 The Subversion (2018).j
Description:

The Witch Part 1: The Subversion is a 2018 South Korean mystery action film directed by Park Hoon-Jung and stars Kim Da Mi, Jo Min Soo, and Choi Woo Shik❤.

A young girl is found by an old couple and raised in a small farming town. Their simple life is turned upside down when a group of dangerous and mysterious people come to find her and take her back to a government facility where she escaped from ten years ago.

Review:

I'll admit it, this isn't technically a horror movie. I mostly wanted to see this because Choi Woo Shik is in it, and his performance did not disappoint. The movie didn't disappoint either. It was gruesome and intriguing from beginning to end, but the runtime was too long, and the fight scenes by the end were a bit ridiculous at times.

This is one of those movies where you're sitting there biting your nails and wondering what's going to happen next. There is a big secret surrounding the main character Koo Ja-Yoon. Who is she and why does she have powers that her adoptive parents are apprehensive about her showing? I'm usually good at figuring out what is going to happen next in a movie since I've seen so many and they usually fit certain patterns, but this one has a good twist!

I got major Firestarter (1984) vibes since both characters are helped by farmers and both are young women with powers caused by experiments. It also reminded me of Stranger Things (2016) since both young women are being hunted because of their abilities. Even though the first half didn't feel entirely fresh and original, the second half defintely caught me off guard.

The runtime and fighting scenes were my two main negative comments for the film. A lot of the first half is working up empathy for Ja-Yoon and showing how she has grown up, who her best friend is, and establishing the fact that strange people are beginning to track her down. The movie flowed well, but when it comes down to it, there was no need to be two hours long.

The fighting scenes were interesting and the reason they are so crazy is because of how inhumanly strong some characters are, but for me, it took me out of the movie and made me laugh a bit. Some scenes ended and I thought, that was cool! While other scenes made me sit there wondering what I had just witnessed.

Overall, would I recommend this movie to you? I do if you're not sick of the "girl who escapes from a government facility and now has superpowers" plot. I'm getting tired of it, but the movie still had a way of putting a different spin on the story even though the beginning felt very familiar. It's well-directed, had great actors, and has many good Choi Woo Shik scenes 👍
