Friday the 13th VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

Description:

Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan is a 1989 slasher film. It is the 8th movie in the franchise and it stars Jensen Daggett, Scott Reeves and Ace (the dog who played Toby aka my favorite character). It was directed by Rob Hedden.

A group of graduating high school students board a cruise to Manhattan not knowing Jason Voorhees has come along with them.

Review:

This is the longest Friday the 13th movie -- and it feels like it!

The truth about this movie is that Jason is only in Manhattan for the last 36 minutes. The rest of the time he is killing teens one by one on a cruise ship. What confuses me the most is that they know a storm is coming and they all get on the boat anyway. The main character, Rennie, doesn't even know how to swim.

I went into this with no expectations. The last film was horrible and the title of this one reminded me of Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood (2003). The way Jason comes back to life is pretty ridiculous. An anchor hits an electrical tube underwater which electrocutes him.

My favorite scene in this movie was when Jason saw a hockey billboard of the mask he was wearing. Other than that, I don't have a lot of positive things to say. It felt like they tried to jampack too much into one film. It was refreshing to finally see Jason outside of a cabin, but too much time was spent on the boat.

The whole subplot as to why Rennie keeps seeing Goo Kid (aka young Jason) seemed absurd to me when we finally see why she fears water. After they finally change locations more ludicrous things happen such as Rennie being kidnapped by thugs and forced to do drugs.

There's also a scene where a character punches Jason for 1 minute and 30 seconds. It made me feel like I was watching the fight scene from They Live (1988).

Overall, I couldn't wait for this movie to end. It felt too long and I lost interest before they even got to New York. I don't recommend this one and I won't be re-watching it.
