Hour of the wolf (1968)

Description:

Hour of the Wolf is a Swedish psychological horror movie from 1968. It stars Max von Sydow (who played Father Merrin in The Exorcist) and Liv Ullmann. It's directed by Ingmar Bergman who also directed Wild Strawberries.

Alma's husband is an artist who has been visited by strange people who seem to be linked to his past and a castle nearby.

Review:

I've watched the whole movie and I'm still not too sure what I just saw.

Hour of the Wolf is a slow paced film that leads you to the madness that the characters are declining into. What I liked about this movie are the camera angles. It uses close-ups and POV shots to put the viewers in the character's shoes. It feels like their strange neighbors are plotting something against you as well.

What didn't work for me was the pace and the plot. I enjoyed the lighting and the way it was shot, but the story wasn't exciting to me. There's one scene where a kid in a speedo attacks the husband and another scene where a woman takes off her hat, along with her whole face.

If you enjoy a slower speed and are a fan of Ingmar Bergman then I would recommend checking it out. If you have less patience (like I do) I would skip this one. It's a bit creepy at the end, but nothing scary.
