nIGHTBREED (1990)

Description:

Nightbreed is a 1990  fantasy horror film directed by Clive Barker.

A man named Boone (Craig Sheffer) is told by his psychiatrist (David Cronenberg!) that he has killed people and the murders are linked to his dreams of a mysterious place called Midian.

Review:

I knew this movie was going to be a strange journey since I've seen Clive Barker's Hellraiser movies. I didn't know it was going to be SO quick paced and intense right from the beginning. The story felt original, but it didn't grab my full attention.

I usually hate when movies are slow paced, but this one needed to slow down. Everything seemed to happen so fast that I was having a hard time trying to make sense of what was being thrown at me. Even when the plot was being explained by one of the characters it felt rushed and vague.

There were some unsettling scenes, but for the most part, I would consider this movie more of a fantasy than a horror. The characters looked so bizarre looking that it took the scariness out of it.

The dialogue was awkward, which kind of fit the film, but Boone's doctor, Dr. Decker had such a soft and quiet voice. Instead of coming off as creepy it just felt like he was trying to give everyone ASMR.

The problem I had with Boone (who gave me major David Boreanaz vibes) was the fact that his character went from zero to a hundred a few minutes into the film. One minute he's chilling with his girlfriend and the next minute his drama with the doctor is unfolding at rapid speeds. The plot overall felt scattered and unorganized.

Cinematically there were a couple of scenes I enjoyed. One of the scenes was in the third act when Boone's girlfriend is trying to find him in Midian. It reminded me of a mixture of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Beetle Juice. That's when I found out Danny Elfman wrote the music for all three movies.

The set design and costumes were unique looking, but it felt like they spent more time on the looks than the story.

In summary, the music fit perfectly, the costumes and scenery were authentic but too outlandish. It detached me from the story and lost my interest. I felt more overwhelmed than frightened and I wouldn't suggest watching this one.
