The HAUNTING (1963)

Description:

The Haunting a 1963 supernatural horror movie. It was directed by Robert Wise (who also directed The Sound of Music).

It stars Julie Harris as Eleanor Lance, a guilt ridden woman who has taken care of her mother most of her life. After her mother dies she is called to Hill House by Dr. John Markway (Richard Johnson) to help him study the haunted mansion.

Review:

The Haunting has a spooky atmosphere right away. The use of black and white instead of color really makes the film scarier and intense.

No one in town will live near the haunted mansion, and as soon as Eleanor settles in and meets the other guests, it becomes obvious they are the only ones in the area.

This movie is beautifully shot, but unfortunately slow paced for me. I would have to categorize it under the same way I felt about "The Witch". I can appreciate the excellent camera work, but I found myself becoming bored and wondering when it was going to end.

There were some scenes that made me jump by the end, and I did enjoy the ending, but as a whole it was too boring for me and I wouldn't watch it again.
