Description:

The House Next Door is a 2017 supernatural Indian horror movie directed by Milind Rau.

Dr. Krish (played by Siddharth) and his wife (Andrea Jeremiah) meet the new neighbors and soon paranormal activity starts to begin.

Review:

The acting, cinematography, and music worked well together to create some horrifying scenes. I liked this movie but there were some scenes that could have been cut out.

In the beginning, there is a long music video type sequence that tells us a story of how the two main characters met and got married. The colors were vibrant and I enjoyed the music, but it felt like I was watching a romantic comedy instead of a horror film. It went on for too long and I felt a disconnect right away.

Luckily after it was over the horror began. This is the first time this year of my Horrorfest that a movie has scared me.

The story was gripping and the atmospheric music helped to sustain the creepy and suspenseful mood. A solar eclipse was the main focus of this film such as in Veronica (2017) It helped tie the plot together along with the fantastic acting. It felt like these were real people facing supernatural forces.

Every character had an importance. When I was baffled by a scene in the movie such as when their new neighbor Jenny suddenly jumps into a well outside and Dr. Krish suddenly goes to save her, it makes sense after the movie is over. In some horror films, random things happen just to scare us and then fade away like it never happened to the other characters.

I loved the way it was filmed. When the camera tilts and moves upside down it symbolizes the upside down cross, which means unworthiness or others see it as satanism.

When a nomad comes to help figure out the connection between Jenny's possession and the house they live in, the camera follows close behind his head. This creates a mysterious tone from not showing his face. This could reflect how the characters feel apprehensive and wary of him.

The story wasn't entirely predictable but the jump scares were a bit overused at times. Ultimately, I'm happy to say I recommend watching this movie. If you can get past the long-winded music video at the beginning then you will have a good time watching the rest.

Rating:

7 upside down crosses out of 10
