Shadow of the Vampire (2000)

Description:

Shadow of the Vampire is a 2000 metafiction horror movie. It stars John Malkovich (who stars in many films such as Being John Malkovich (1999)) and Willem Dafoe (another legendary actor). It was directed by E. Elias Merhige (who also directed Begotten (1990), one of the most unsettling movies I've ever seen).

In 1921, directer Murnau and his crew begin filming their movie "Nosferatu". The crew becomes suspicious when they meet an actor named Max Schreck who plays the role of the vampire realistically well.

Review:

An interesting story, but not too exciting.

This movie was based on the myths surrounding the real Nosferatu movie. There were rumors that the real Max Schreck was a vampire, but he was already an established actor at the time. If you haven't seen Nosferatu go watch it right now!

The opening of this film was a tad slow. I like when movies incorporate the opening credits into the beginning rather than having five minutes of names and slow-moving pictures. It is well directed but has a slow build up. It makes you wonder along with the crew if Schreck is an actor or a vampire. The score fits perfectly with the movie.

The story examines what happens when obsession and madness take over a human being. It's always interesting when stories show that humans can be the real monsters.

William Dafoe did an amazing job playing Max Schreck. He was offered the role of the Green Goblin in Spiderman (2002) because of his performance in this movie.

Rating:

Overall, this was an eerie tale of one's thirst for success and fame. I enjoyed it, but it didn't captivate me. I would watch it again although I wouldn't add it to my "favorites". I'd suggest watching it if you like metafiction, vampires and a movie with a great cast.
