The Wailing (2016)

Description:

The Wailing is a 2016 Korean horror movie. It stars Do-won Kwak and Jung-min Hwang. It's directed by Hong-jin Na who also directed The Chaser (2008), which was more unsettling than this movie.

A police officer named Jong-goo is thrown into a battle with demons when his daughter and others in their village become possessed.

Review:

This movie was like riding a rollercoaster of emotions. I was frightened for the first ten minutes, bored during the second act and creeped out at the end.

The film starts with gruesome murders and a bumbling police officer who reminds me of Shaun from Shaun of the Dead. Both have to fight against zombie-like people and have no idea what they are doing. The Wailing has some funny lines but is mostly serious.

It is definitely not slow paced. There is a lot going on and sometimes random things happen such as a man getting struck by lightning, a car crash and a man vomiting copious amounts of blood. It has a great start, but the second act involves over-the-top acting that made me sit there going,

"Please stop screaming. I know you're possessed but please stop."

Another problem I had was having to watch goats, chickens and a dog die. I lose sympathy for main characters when they kill animals.

I did like that the characters seemed like real people. I could believe that the police officer wanted to save his daughter and some scenes near the end were truly frightening.

In the end, this movie is worth a watch. I won't be watching it again, but I'm thankful that Hong-jin Na continues to direct intense films. I'm excited to see what he creates in the future. I understand why people like the film, but this wasn't my favorite movie.
