Evolution (2015)

Description:

Évolution is a 2015 French horror-thriller. It stars Max Brebant and Roxane Duran. It's directed by Lucile Hadzihalilovic who was a writer for the movie Enter The Void (one of the trippiest movies I've ever seen).

A boy named Nicolas lives by the sea with a group of women and other boys. He begins to question the medicine and strange medical procedures performed on him when he discovers what the women do at night.

Review:

Welcome to another slow paced movie.

Évolution is a quiet film that uses barely any dialogue to create a creepy atmosphere. The cinematography is beautiful and this movie has won two awards for it, but it's so quiet that it almost put me to sleep.

Max Brebant does a great job playing Nicolas. My problem with this movie isn't the characters or the performance, but the lack of horror. There are scenes with disturbing imagery (and lots of starfish references) but nothing in this film caused fear.

I can enjoy a slower film when the story is gripping and I can't wait to see what happens next, but I wasn't interested in this one. It didn't grab my attention and instead almost lulled me to sleep. I wouldn't recommend watching this one.
