Description:

Brightburn is a 2019 superhero horror film directed by David Yarovesky and stars Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, and Jackson A. Dunn.

A couple who are unable to have a baby of their own finds one in the woods near their house and decides to raise him as Brandon Breyer. Things become sinister when he turns twelve and discovers he has special powers no human could ever have.

Here's another kid with powers who ends up living on a farm! I was excited to watch this one since I had heard a lot of people describe it as a Superman movie if Superman turned out to be evil instead of good. Sound appealing right? Unfortunately, the movie fell apart about halfway through and I didn't care about any of the characters by the end.

The beginning of the film gave me a lot of hope that this could turn out to be an entertaining story. A lot of stories seem to be taking classics and giving them dark twists such as Riverdale and the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, so I was curious to see what this story would be like if a character similar to Superman was actually evil. I wondered, is this character going to be horribly bullied? Are his parents going to turn out to be awful? Is something so traumatic going to happen that makes him evil? To answer this all, not really.

To be fair, the main character, Brandon, is bullied at school. Any kind of bullying is unacceptable no matter how big or little, but the interest he has in one of his female classmates creeped me out and made no sense. Without spoiling too much, he sneaks into her bedroom during the film, breaks her hand when she calls him a pervert, and then proceeds to pursue her after this, even going as far as to harming someone in her family.

His parents turn out to be incredibly supportive and there is no real chance to show Brandon struggling with his powers as either being good or evil. He seems to become completely destructive when strange voices (that were not scary at all) start possessing him in his sleep. I wished there was a defining moment where Brandon chose to use his powers for evil instead of it automatically being decided that he's a bratty child who suddenly wants to kill everyone.

The picture above demonstrates how I felt when the movie ended. The story could have been way better and more impactful if Brandon's actions had deeper motivation than "I'm better than you and if you don't do what I want I'll kill you." His victims he picked to kill didn't make much sense and some of his attack scenes were laughable. There was a pretty gruesome eye scene that made me squirm, but overall I wouldn't recommend this film.
