Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985)

Description:

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning is a 1985 slasher film. It is the 5th in the franchise and it stars John Shepherd and Melanie Kinnaman. It was directed by Danny Steinmann, who never directed another Friday the 13th again.

Tommy (from the last movie) is alive and has to live at a youth development center where he fears that Jason Vorhees might still be alive.

Review:

This movie is well-shot but follows the same steps of the other four movies where people die one by one followed by trick endings.

Friday the 13th franchise seems to go:

Setting: Isolating place with less than 10 people.

Characters: Stereotypical jocks, goths, nerds, losers, jerks, bimbos, bad cops

You can also find some 80's cocaine use and a fair amount of nudity. At least three people die while naked.

With that being said, I usually don't go into these kinds of movies with much hope for a great film. It does its job with creating a spooky atmosphere with classic Jason sound effects. It is also creative with the way characters are killed. Unfortunately, the acting isn't the best. Pam and the waitress sound awfully unbelievable and almost laughable.

Overall I felt like I was watching a film I've seen a million times before. It was effective at being creepy but the acting didn't cut it and the overuse of nudity was unnecessary. It seems like when one character survives a film, they always end up completely insane in the next.

I would only watch this again if it happened to be on TV. Check it out if you enjoy slashers. Don't bother watching if you're looking for a great horror film.
