under the shadow (2016)

Description:

Under the Shadow is a 2016 horror movie set in the 1980s that stars Narges Rashidi and Avin Manshadi. This is director Babak Anvari's first full-length film.

A mother must protect her daughter when the war in Tehran increases and paranormal activity begins to threaten their lives as well.

Review:

WOW. The pacing in the first act was a bit too slow for me, but this was a great film.

I didn't like Shideh, the main character, at first until I understood her situation. We learn that there is a war going on in her country of Iran. She has a strained relationship with her husband and daughter, she cannot become a doctor because of political reasons and her daughter starts seeing Djinns (spirits).

The panning in this movie was brilliant.  I wasn't sure if something scary was going to pop-up or not. Horror movies have become predictable, but this movie surprised me many times. There was no excessive jump scare music and barely any music at all which made things more realistically horrifying.

Shideh's struggle to live under the shadow of her country where she must hide her body in public and the terrifying djinns lurking in the shadows is a perfect blend of horror and real-life terror.

I highly recommend seeing this movie. If you can get past the first thirty minutes then you are in for a scare.
