Big Bad Wolves (2013)

Description:

Big Bad Wolves is a 2013 Israeli horror thriller movie directed by Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado.

A teacher named Dror (played by Rotem Keinan) is suspected to be a child murderer by a rogue cop (Lior Ashkenazi)  and a father (Tzahi Grad) whose daughter was recently killed. Did Dror do it? Or is revenge blinding everyone?

Review:

The idea was compelling, but the film felt like an uninteresting black comedy version of Prisoners (2013)

This is one of those films that never felt like horror to me. The beginning was more of a crime build up and the rest reminded me of a psychological variant of Hostal, AKA torture. It was intriguing to find out if the main suspect of the murders is the teacher, Dror or not -- but that was it. The acting was good but I felt bored most of the time.

Tzahi Grad did a good job playing an unpredictable father seeking revenge, but he seemed TOO eager to murder someone. There's an idiotic scene where he buys a new house with a huge soundproof basement and asks a woman to stand down there alone and scream... as loud as she can... AND SHE DOES. Who does that? If anyone asks you to do that, please run away.

At the end of the film, I had more questions than answers and I felt like it was a waste of time. It has a different concept, but the comedy didn't work for me. Micki's character is likable but like the father, he was extremely aggressive toward Dror right away without much evidence.

In short, I felt more disturbed than frightened. I wouldn't recommend this movie but I would recommend watching Prisoners (2013) if you haven't seen it. It's not a horror movie but it's a great thriller!
