Spider Baby (1967)

Description:

Spider Baby is a 1967 horror comedy. It stars Lon Chaney Jr. (who stars in The Wolf Man (1941) and Carol Ohmart (who stars in House on Haunted Hill (1959)). It was directed and written by Jack Hill.

A family suffering from "Merrye Syndrome" are visited by their cousin Emily and her acquaintances who find out there is something terribly wrong with them.

Review:

This is a strange one!

I loved the ominous beginning with the thunder sound effects and Quinn K. Redeker's character introducing the story. There's a prominent eerie feeling throughout the film but sometimes it was a bit boring. The first and second act is used to build up the tension. The set design was perfect with all the cobwebs and unkept looking rooms.

It was great and surreal to see a young Sid Haig and legendary actor Lon Chaney Jr. Apparently, Sid was nervous around Lon on set, I would be too! Mary Mitchel did an excellent job acting as well. The use of comedy made the characters seem scarier, but this movie wasn't too horrifying. It was more interesting than nerve-racking.

Rating:

I liked the way it was directed and edited. I'm not too sure why Carol Ohmart's character was in lingerie for the last act, but overall I enjoyed this movie. I'd recommend this if you like The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) or Basket Case (1982). I wouldn't watch it again since I found some of it quite boring, but I'm glad I saw it.
