Wild

Strawberries (1964)

Description:

Wild Strawberries is a 1957 Swedish movie directed by Ingmar Bergman (who was influenced by "The Phantom Carriage".

This film follows a retired doctor named Isak Borg (played by Victor Sjöström, who directed "The Phantom Carriage"!) and his pregnant daughter-in-law who are traveling to his old university to receive an honorary degree. Isak reminisces about his past as they meet hitchhikers and family members along the way.

Review:

If you just read the description and said to yourself,

"How is this a horror movie?" - You are right. This isn't a horror movie. I found this movie on a site I love called I Check Movies in a list under Horror, but they might have made a mistake.

This was apparently Stanley Kubrick's second favorite movie of all time, so I decided to check it out anyway.

There are no ghosts, killers, or ghouls, but this movie questions the meaning of life. It shows an old man knowing he doesn't have much time left, which everyone will relate to one day -- depressing? I know! But this is the scariest thing I found from this movie.

The dream shown in the picture above that Isak has, is where he finds a man on the street with a distorted face. This is followed by a coffin sliding out of a carriage, it opens and his own dead body is shown inside.

This movie is a great piece of art and is beautifully filmed such as "The Witch", "The Phantom Carriage", and the "The Haunting", but even though I can appreciate it's beauty, it was too slow paced for me.

I would only recommend this movie to hardcore movie fans who enjoy being mesmerized by magnificent cinematography and thought provoking plot.
