The Witch Part 1: The Subversion is a 2018 South Korean mystery action film directed by Park Hoon-Jung and stars Kim Da Mi, Jo Min Soo, and Choi Woo Shik❤.
A young girl is found by an old couple and raised in a small farming town. Their simple life is turned upside down when a group of dangerous and mysterious people come to find her and take her back to a government facility where she escaped from ten years ago.
This is one of those movies where you're sitting there biting your nails and wondering what's going to happen next. There is a big secret surrounding the main character Koo Ja-Yoon. Who is she and why does she have powers that her adoptive parents are apprehensive about her showing? I'm usually good at figuring out what is going to happen next in a movie since I've seen so many and they usually fit certain patterns, but this one has a good twist!

Review:
I was interested in this movie when I found out Guillermo del Toro was the executive producer. This movie had all the del Toro elements; children, the supernatural, and elegant cinematography.
Unfortunately, the plot quickly became convoluted and I found myself losing interest rather than wondering what was going to happen next. I found the acting wasn't the best, especially from Annabel (played by Jessica Chastain). Side note: I did like her t-shirts, The Misfits and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
The worst part for me was how NOT scary the Mama character was. She looked like an unfinished CGI project. The younger sister, Lily (played by Isabelle Nélisse) frightened me more than Mama did. Seriously, that kid was freaky.
Overall, like most movies I review, I can appreciate the camera work in this movie. Some scenes were well done, photography-wise, but the story didn't grab my attention. I wanted the movie to end. I didn't feel connected to the characters and I wasn't scared! Halloween is coming soon, I need some scary movies!
