Grave Encounters (2011)

Description:

Grave Encounters is a 2011 horror movie that stars Ashleigh Gryzko and Sean Rogerson.

A group of "paranormal investigators" lock themselves inside an abandoned asylum to tape their show "Grave Encounters." Things go wrong when their fake show turns into something real.

Review:

"It's time to have some grave encounters."

This movie starts by presenting itself as found-footage. This subgenre has caused me lots of sea-sickness when done poorly -- so I was a bit worried when I started the film. Especially when it's a horror film on Netflix.

Right away I liked the plot. A group of bogus ghost hunters who are shown bribing and using "psychic mediums". It reminded me of all the ghost hunting shows I used to watch as a kid. Over-the-top "ghost whisperers" screaming at nothing in the dark.

That's pretty much the gist of this movie.  They use these common ideas to poke fun, but when the comedy shifts to horror in the second act, there was still a fair amount of shaky camera movements and unnecessary screaming.

As soon as something scary finally happened the camera would either pan away or drop to the ground.

The characters were basically Loud Screaming Guy, Crying Screaming Girl, Lance and The One Guy I Liked Who Goes Missing 20 Mins Into The Film.

If the characters had spent less time getting lost and yelling at one another then there would be more character building moments. Forty minutes into the film I didn't care what was going to happen to them.

Overall, it was a good idea but the camera effects and lack of character development ruined it for me. I wouldn't watch this one again.
