Haxan (1922)

Description:

Haxan is a 1922 Swedish-Danish documentary horror movie. It stars Maren Pedersen and Clara Pontoppidan. It was directed by Benjamin Christensen.

This silent film examines witches and devils throughout history.

Review:

I was excited to see this, but it wasn't as good as I thought.

I'm not sure who adds in the music to silent films or if its the same as the original 1922 version, but this soundtrack was irritating. It took away from the film and was distracting. There were some scenes that could have been eerie without music.

The special effects were great to see. I liked how they rewound some scenes to make it seem like objects were moving backward by themselves. I also enjoyed the scene where the women were flying on broomsticks in the sky. The close-up shots and costumes were well done.

Rating:

It's scary to think how people could accuse others of being witches with little evidence. The director points out that most of the people accused a long time ago were most likely suffering from mental illnesses.

Overall this movie was two hours and two minutes. It felt long and I wasn't extremely interested in it. The special effects and imagery were good but I won't be watching this again. If you enjoy silent movies you should check this out. If not, I would skip it.
