Rare Exports (2010)

Description:

Rare Exports is a 2010 dark fantasy Finnish horror movie directed by Jalmari Helander.

Two boys in Finland find out that men from America have come to dig up something in the mountains. One of the boys, Pietari (played by Onni Tommila) has been researching about Joulupukki (a Christmas figure that became our modern day Santa Clause). He has read that Santa is actually very dangerous and believes that is what the men are foolishly digging up.

Review:

The cinematography, scenery, and music were astounding but the story fell short.

The tone of the movie was mainly dramatic and tense but there were some funny scenes. One was of the Scrooge-like American character stands up and suddenly has a climactic backdrop of the mountains. It seemed extremely unnecessary and over the top (on purpose which made it even more hilarious).

In the beginning, the story kept me involved, but after the 30-minute mark, I felt like they could have made things more interesting by having the children team up instead of Pietari teaming up with the adults.

The most terrifying part of this film was watching the kids run around with guns. In the area they live, they have to worry about wolves (and an evil Santa Clause), but it was still nerve wreaking to watch.

The best part was the lighting and the gorgeous mountains. There was a good amount of suspense but nothing was scary to me. The Santa they talked about was barely shown and the pace could have been quicker. The special effects near the end were very bad and made everything even less scary.

I don't know much about Finland, but I definitely want to learn Finnish someday because of this film and I want to delve into some more Finnish movies soon.

In the end, this didn't scare me. I would not recommend this film but I would recommend Black Christmas (1974) if you're looking for a Christmas horror mixture.

I would also suggest Let The Right One In (2008) which is a Swedish vampire movie. It has some breathtaking snowy scenes like Rare Exports, but I liked the story way better than this one.
